Gelatin coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and bioactivity study |

Current research explores surface coating of magnetite nanoparticles (IOPs) with gelatin, and bioactivity and biocompatibility of the gelatin coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (GIOPs) to evaluate their potential as a biomaterial. The nanoparticles were characterized with various physico-chemical techniques. The kinetic and mechanism studies of the apatite growth in simulated body fluid (SBF) suggest that initially calcium and phosphorous ions are deposited to the surface of the GIOPs from the SBF leading to formation of amorphous Ca/P particles. Later after 9 days of the incubation, the amorphous particles are fused to form crystalline structures. The analyses indicate preferential growth of the crystals to 002 plane, forming needle and blade like morphologies. Presence of the IOPs in the core of this bioactive material makes it a potential candidate as thermoseeds in biomedical applications, especially for hyperthermic treatment of bone cancer cells1. |
