제목 | Mechanical properties and higher order structures of bacterial polyester films prepared by roll drawing and uniaxial extension processes |
초록 | Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a thermoplastic bacterial polyester stored in microorganisms as intracellular carbon and energy storage material. However, it is well known that the processing of PHB and PHB copolymer into fibers, films, and other products is very hard, because of the brittle character of melt processed PHB which tends to be filled with large sperulites. Several groups have attempted to improve the mechanical properties of PHB solution cast films and reported that the solution cast films do not show good mechanical properties. In this study, roll drawing was applied to the compression molded PHB films. After the roll drawing process, the uniaxial drawing was achieved up to high draw ratio. The roll drawn PHB film showed a planar orientation and the uniaxial drawn films tend to have an uniaxial orientation as revealed by the wide angle X-ray diffraction. Tensile strength and modulus increased and elongation at break decreased with the uniaxial draw ratio.
