Bioelectrical cues play an important role in stem cell engineering and optoelectrical manipulation has been recently spotlighted. However, functionalization of polymeric systems by incorporation of electroconductive polymers and nanomaterials often damages. Here, we developed photoactive polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) substrates to promote the neurogenesis of human neural stem cells (hNSCs). Interestingly, optogenetically modified hNSCs exhibited further maturation of neuronal phenotypes and functional neuron-like electrophysiological features. P3HT substrates developed in this study can serve as a platform to produce neuronal cells exhibiting functionally matured neuronal phenotypes.
