Recently, composites of organic polymers and colloidal nanosilicas are attracting attentions due to their high heat resistance, dimensional stability, and excellent mechanical strength. In order to improve the dispersion of nanosilica in polymer, silane coupling agents are employed for the surface treatments of the silica. We have investigated sol-gel reaction between the nanosilica and (3-glycioxypropyl)trimethoxysilane(GPTMS) by microwave irradiation, and then cationic cure of the modified silica and poly(propylene glycol)(PPG). Boron trifluoride diethyl etherate(BF3O(C2H5)2) was used as a cationic initiator. We confirmed the sol-gel reaction between colloidal silica and GPTMS and the cationic reaction between the modified silica and PPG employing FT-IR spectroscopy. It was found that the hybrids show thermal degradation at higher temperature than PPG. It is postulated that the hybrids based on the nanosilica and PPG have superior flame retardancy and mechanical properties. |
