Facilitated transport membranes based on silver ions and metallic silver nanoparticles as an olefin carrier have been paid much attention to separate olefin from its mixtures with paraffin. It has been known that acetylene is present in many petrochemical feed stocks as an impurity and it may react with silver compounds to from silver acetylide, an explosive compound. Therefore, potential reactivities of the olefin carrier such as silver ions and metallic silver nanoparticles toward acetylene were investigated. Silver acetylide was readily formed upon acetylene exposure when alkaline water was used as a reaction medium. However, no evidence was shown for the formation of silver acetylide when either silver salt such as AgNO3 and AgBF4, or metallic silver nanoparticles were exposed to propylene at ambient condition without water. |
