Hydrogels containing silver acetate as antibacterial agent have been prepared using gamma ray irradiation. The hydrogels are composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), kappa-carrageenan (KC) and silver acetate. The concentration of solution was 9 wt%. The ratio of PVP:PEG:KC was 6:1:2. The concentration of the silver acetate is 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.07 M. The radiation dose were 25, 35 and 50 kGy (dose rate; 10 kGy/h). The physical properties of the synthesized hydrogels were evaluated by gel content, weight swelling ratio and mechanical properties. The antibacterial activities of the hydrogels were Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. |
