Automatically for formation of vertical alignment (VA) of liquid crystal (LC), polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxanes (POSS) can be used. However, the pristine POSS create some macro particles of generating light scattering by aggregation with themselves in the host nematic (N) LC. To overcome this drawback, the cyanobiphenyl monosubstituted hybrid POSS was designed and synthesized, which exhibited an excellent dispersion in NLC media and formed the perfect VA of LC without conventional polymer-based VA layers. We realized that cyanobiphenyl part chemically attached to the pristine POSS with an alkyl chain can improve the initial solubility and interaction with NLC media.
