Thermodynamics forces crystalline organic materials to be crystallized below its melting temperature. In contrast to this general observation, we present molecular design of a thermally stable supercooled liquid based on balanced intermolecular interactions, and its lighting-up shear-triggered crystallization. Designed diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative, DPP8, remains as stable supercooled liquid without crystallization upon thermal cycles. More intriguingly, this supercooled liquid DPP8 transforms to its crystalline solid phase under shear conditions with dramatic optical property changes. Because the shear-triggered crystallization of DPP8 is about million times more sensitive than typical mechanochromism observed in organic materials, the crystallization is achieved even by attachment of living cells, which demonstrates the potential of this material system in biomedical and optical applications. |
