Polymer electrolyte membranes play vital roles as ion conductors, insulators for electrodes, and separators for positive and negative electrolytes in electrochemical devices. Alternative membranes for the replacement of the polymer electrolyte membrane must exhibit high oxidative stability, low ion penetration, good insulating properties, excellent proton conductivity, high mechanical strength, and desirable cost-effectiveness. In this study, an organic-inorganic hybrid membrane composed of low-cost sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) and sulfonated silica with improved membrane properties for application in electrochemical device and water treatment system was developed.
