Recently, much attention has been paid to polylactide or poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as an environmentally friendly, biocompatible, biodegradable, and renewable thermoplastic polymer, because the exhaustion of fossil resources and the environmental pollution have become severer than ever. Although PLA exhibits excellent transparency, compostibility, thermal and mechanical properties, the weakness in thermal resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability limit its application. To improve or modify the various properties of PLA, we have carried out investigations on copolymerization, blending, and incorporation of nanoparticles such as clay, carbon nanotubes, POSS, etc. In the presentation, the structure-property-application relationship of functionalized PLA-based nanocomposites will be reviewed and discussed. |
