제목 Synthesis of various block copolymers and application to liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide
초록 Carbon dioxide is becoming increasingly important solvent systems for chemical industry. Carbon dioxide as a liquid or supercritical fluid exhibits solvent properties that are tunable with pressure and it is essentially nontoxic, nonflammable, high volatile, inexpensive, and environmentally benign. However only a few classes of polymeric materials (fluoropolymers and silicones) are soluble in carbon dioxide, these being categorized as "CO2-philic". While conventional polymers, having either hydrophilic or lipophilic character, are insoluble in CO2 and are termed "CO2-phobic". Through use of CO2-philic repeat units in copolymer, amphiphilic materials can be moleculary engineered for use as surfactants in carbon dioxide. The ability to design surfactants offers new opportunities in protein and polymer chemistry, separation science, reaction engineering, microelectronics, and nano technology.
The work presented here is focused on the synthesis of block copolymers containing dimethyl siloxane or perfluorooctyl methacrylate blocks by controlled polymerization technique. In addition, their applications in dispersion polymerization in supercritical carbon dioxide, water/CO2 emulsions, and formation of nanoparticles in water-in-CO2 microemulsions are demonstrated.
