Development of High Efficient Alkaline Electrolysis Cell For Hydrogen Production |

Alkaline water electrolysis is mature technology to generate a large amount of hydrogen gas using renewable energy sources which posed some challenges in industrial technology such as efficiency, material cost, reliability, electrode durability in harsh operating condition. Here, we synthesized nickel based durable OER/HER electrodes using conventional electroplating technique. The composition control of nickel based electrodes produce porous surface morphology on large area and high catalytic activity in strong base solution. With the cell operating at 50 to 80 °C, the cell voltage at low current densities was dependent on several experimental condition such as flow rate and gas bubble. Therefore, we developed new cell architecture related to the flow channel and electrode gap. We optimized the operating parameters of alkaline water electrolysis in order to reduce the IR drop. As a result, our alkaline electrolysis cell shows high efficiency of hydrogen production compared to conventional alkaline water electrolysis. These results suggest that several operating conditions are important considerations for appropriate cell and material designs for industrial scale. |
