Biological CO2 capture system using marine carbonic anhydrase |

Carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) possess a reversible hydration activity of carbon dioxide (CO2 + H2O ↔ H+ + HCO3-). CA can catalyze the hydration of over 600,000 molecules of CO2 per molecule of CA per second . CA can be employed for the fixation process of large quantities of CO2 into CaCO3 in presence of suitable cations at modest pH values in vitro. Since CA has such distinctive CO2-convertinf properties of CA, CA is now being attended as a prominent biocatalyst for CO2 capture system development. Here, we reported several functional α type-CAs (aCA) from marine resources and characterized each aCA in terms of catalyzing activity, Temp/pH optimum, stability & tolerance, metal/anion effects, and so on. Moreover, we showed that the obtained aCAs can be employed for the conversion of CO2 to CaCO3 (as calcite form) in the presence of Ca2+. The aCAs and their CO2-conversion processes could be prominent basis for development of practical CO2 capture system. |
