In this study, the effect of coagulant and molecular weight on the wet spinnability of regenerated silk fibroin was examined. Among the various coagulants, methanol and ethanol showed the best wet spinning performance and maximum draw ratio. Methanol and ethanol showed a good spinnability regardless of molecular weight of SF. However, the other coagulant showed a deterioration of spinnability with a reduction of silk fibroin molecular weight. Regardless of coagulant type, the wet spun silk filaments exhibited beta sheet conformation indicating the crystallization of silk fibroin molecules took place during the spinning process. |
