The Effect of Manufacturing Methods of Polypropylene/Carbon Nanotube Composites on Mechanical and Electrical Properties |

Polypropylene(PP)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) composites with different contents of MWNTs were prepared by solvent and melt mixing methods. The first method solves PP and disperses MWNTs separately in Decalin. After then, the two solutions were mixed and dried. The latter method uses a twin screw compounder to enhance the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the composite prepared by first method. During the processes, carbon nanotubes were not functionalized for the purpose of enhancing dispersion and interaction between them and polymer matrix. The electrical property of the PP/carbon nanotube composites was much improved by the melt mixing. The improvement was due to the enhanced dispersion by melt mixing. The mechanical properties of PP/carbon nanotube composites were not improved because of poor adhesion between carbon nanotubes and PP matrix. |
