Block copolymers with micellization have got tremendous impetus on the ongoing research in the area of drug delivery technology, due to their capability to provide a biomaterial having broad range amphiphilic characteristics, as well as targeting the drugs to specific site. Thus concentrating on the use of polymeric micelles as pharmaceutical carriers, a new class of pH-sensitive polymers was investigated. The copolymers bears s-triazine ring containing sulfonamide for the preparation of pH-responsive polymeric micelles. The design of these copolymer [poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)-sulphonamide-poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)] [MPEG-PLGA-SA-PLGA-MPEG] is based on hydrophobic characters of PLGA as biodegradable and s-triazine ring containing sulfonamide as pH responsive moiety. Whereas hydrophilic character involve as MPEG as thermosensitive part of these block copolymer. The copolymer (MPEG-PLGA-SA-PLGA-MPEG) in water showed soluble/insoluble transition, while their pH sensitivity was confirmed by the change in turbidity or particle size as function of pH. These polymers were found to self assemble to form micelles and this was detected by fluorescence spectrophotometer. These pH-responsive polymer micelles may present a potential for various biomedical and bioengineering fields. |
