Effect of heparin-like polymers on fibrin formation process characterized by QCM-Z and AFM |

Fibrin formation, which is caused by the interaction between fibrinogen and thrombin, was controlled by varying concentration of heparin-like polymers. The change of physical property of fibrin by the action of heparin-like materials has not been fully understood although the anticoagulant function of heparin has been well known. In this study, we prepared heparin-like polymers and investigated the effect of heparin-like polymers on fibrin formation by using quartz crystal microbalance with impedance monitoring (QCM-Z). QCM-Z technique allowed simultaneous measurements of the mass change and the viscoelastic property of fibrin layers. AFM was used to characterize the final morphology of polymerized fibrin layers and the AFM images supported the QCM-Z results. Using QCM-Z and AFM, it was clearly found that heparin-like polymers strongly affect the extent of fibrin formation and the viscoelastic property of the fibrin network. |
