Study on Cell Cytotoxicity and Cytokine Modulation of Natural Herbal Extracts |

Houttuynia cordata (HC) and Eucommia ulmoides (EU) have been used as traditional medicine in Korea and are known to have antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-allergic activities. In this study, to evaluate the cell cytotoxicity of the HC and EU extracts mixtures (HEEM) on human mast cells (HMC-1), the HC and EU were extracted with distilled water and then the HEEM was freeze-dried and sterilized using γ-rays irradiation. The cytotoxicity was measured by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and the effects of HEWE on TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8 allergic response in HMC-1 were investigated. These results showed that the HEWE did not significantly affect cell viability and had no toxicity and reduced TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8 response on HMC-1 cells. These findings indicate that the HEEM can be used as potential therapeutic agents. |
