Robust, Conducting and Transparent Polymer Composites using Surface-modified and Individualized Double Walled Carbon Nanotubes |

CNTs have been considered as the ideal nano-sized reinforcing filler in the continuous polymer matrices. Here we demonstrated that DWNTs, consisting of two coaxial concentric tubes, provide superior reinforcing effect to SWNTs and MWNTs; chemical moieties which are selectively introduced on the outer tubes impart the ability to individualize and provide effective anchoring sites for strong bonding with polymers, while the optical properties of the inner tubes remain unchanged. Individually reinforced DWNTs make the polyimide stronger and electrically conductive, and optically active without any deterioration of transparency.
