Micro-technology has made extensive contributions to progress in the fields of bio-technology. Recent advances have extended the applications of micro-technology to biomedical devices including tissue engineering. Microfluidic platforms, which enable the manipulation of biomimetic microenvironments and cellularized artificial organs with biomaterials, have contributed to the advance of biomedical research from cell biology to the organs-on-a-chips. Here, we introduce the applications of microfluidic platform that can be used for 3-dimensional cellularized hydrogel structures such as micro-fibers and beads. The various hydrogels were employed for fabrication of 3-dimensional scaffolds with well-defined shapes, encapsulation of drugs and immobilization of cells. The merging of microfluidic platform and biocompatible hydrogels could be a potentially powerful approach to generate 3-dimenstional engineered tissue constructs. |
