Melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microspheres are versatile material which can be used in a variety of applications due to its low cost, ease of synthesis and unique surface functionalities. In this study, MF microsphere with superhydrophobic surfaces was prepared by immobilization of gold nanoparticles on it and a subsequent monolayer adsorption of dodecyl mercaptan on the gold nanoparticles. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and superhydrophobic property of the modified surface are characterized by FE-TEM, SEM, FT-IR, XPS, and water contact angle measurement. The surface modified MF microsphere has a water contact angle of about 163˚, which arise from the formation of nanoscale roughness on the particle surface and decreased surface tension. Oil/water separation properties of the surface modified MF microspheres were also examined. |
