We demonstrate that the efficiency of DSSCs can be changed by modification of the TiO2 electrode with aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The chain length of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acid strongly influenced the characteristic parameters of the resultant solar cells. Particularly, in case of modification with 1,11-undecane dicarboxylic acid, the solar cell efficiency was increased from that of unmodified solar cell by more than 30%. Experimental results suggest that the long-chain dicarboxylic acids act as cross-linkers between TiO2 nanoparticles to enhance the conductivity of the electrode, providing a new mechanism to improve the performance of DSSCs. |
