Polymeric microspheres have been widely exploited as an injectable system to deliver cells to the desired site in a minimally invasive manner. In this study, we demonstrated that alginate microspheres modified with RGD peptides can form aggregates in the presence of cells and the formation of these aggregates is shear-reversible. In addition, since alginate is not degradable in physiological conditions, alginate was slightly oxidized with sodium periodate and used to prepare degradable alginate microsphere/cell aggregates. We tested the efficacy of cell/microsphere aggregates in cartilage regeneration in a mouse model using primary rabbit chondrocytes. |
