In an autotrophic microalgae culture system using industrial flue gas, a decrease in the pH drop of the media due to the continuous supply of CO2 inhibits cell growth. Expensive buffering agents added to control the media pH, result in increases the overall cost of the culture process. Herein, we used bicarbonate and phosphate develops an economic buffering agent for large-scale use. The microalgae H. pluvialis was cultivated using these buffer solutions under autotrophic outdoor conditions. Finally, flue gas was introduced to produce the microalgae biomass, and the bicarbonate/phosphate buffer system was observed to in-crease the biomass and astaxanthin productivity to 105% and 103%, respectively. These results show that the proposed buffer system is applicable in mass outdoor microalgae cultivation using industrial flue gas and that it is also cost-effective. |
