Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Photonic Gels: Towards Application in Mechanical Pressure Sensor |

Photonic crystals have been of great interest in the field of science and technology due to their unique optical properties. In recent, our group demonstrated organic/inorganic hybrid photonic gels via self-assembly of block copolymers and subsequent infiltration of silica nanoparticles into one domain of copolymers by sol-gel process. Unusual phase separation of block copolymers occurring in sol-gel reaction led multiple organic/inorganic stacks separated by mesoporous silica bridges. The mesoporous silica bridges are fragile and can be easily collapse down when mechanical pressure was applied. Taking advantage of their structural properties, we demonstrate a novel application of block copolymer gels in pressure sensors. Apparent shift of photonic stop bands was observed when mechanical pressure was applied on the photonic gels, which is the result of collapse of silica. This system may provide a simple preparation method and convenient detection of color change via naked eye. |
