One-pot Sequential Coupling and Hydrogenolysis of Furfural and Acetone for the Synthesis of 1-Octanol |

An energy-efficient system for the one-pot production of 1-octanol from biomass-derived furfural (FAL) and acetone (ACE) under mild conditions in excess acetone was established. The sequential aldol-condensation/ hydrogenation/ hydrogenolysis was conducted over different synthesized heterogeneous catalysts. The one-pot, 3-step transformation of FAL and ACE showed 100 % FAL conversion with 80% selectivity to 1-octanol over Mg1Al3-LDH + Ru/Al2O3 + ILCF3SO3. The total 1-octanol yield was 71%. The basicity of the Mg1Al3-LDH catalyst is responsible for the abstraction of the alpha proton of acetone to generate enolate in the aldol condensation and the formation of a C−C bond. The strong acidity of KCC-ILCF3SO3 is found to be in favor of the cleavage of the secondary C–O bond in water resulting in high selectivity to 1-octanol.
