Improved performance of silicon anode using PEDOT:PSS copolymer binder |

Despite the higher capacity of silicon anode compared to graphite, the extreme volume change of Si during charge and discharge cycles hinders commercialization of Si anodes. To solve that issue, many researchers have studied functional binders acting as more than two functional parts, especially conductive and binding parts. Here, we suggest a new copolymer binder, PEDOT:PSS-g-PAAm. The two polymers were chosen because PEDOT:PSS is one of the most promising conducting polymers and PAAm shows superior mechanical binding force. By click reaction, PEDOT:PSS-g-PAAm was successfully synthesized in aqueous solution and we confirmed the results using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The grafted copolymer possesses high electric conductivity (~2 S/cm) and chemical stability. Si anode half cells made with the polymer showed improved cell performance, more than 1500mAh/g capacity with excellent capacity retention over 100 cycles. |
