Bio-inspired Pt, Pd, Rh nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated by a protein shell provide a new strategy for an effective catalyst loading route within WO3 nanofibers (NFs) via electrospinning to achieve the dectection of trace target biomarkers in breath. The protein-templated NPs with very small size (~2 nm) are well-dispersed within the WO3 NFs, offering superior catalytic effect in chemoresistive type gas sensors. Importantly, nano-sized pores within the granular WO3 NFs are generated as a result of the decomposition of the protein shell, effectively suppressing grain growth of WO3 crystallites during heat treatment. The bio-inspired catalysts (Pt, Pd, Rh)-loaded WO3 NFs exhibited superior sensing performance toward acetone, toluene and hydrogen sulfide, repectively, offering selective gas detection with minimal cross-sensitivity aginst other interfering gases for potential diagnosis of the diabetes, lung cancer, and halitosis by analyzing exhaled breath components. |
