Development and Characterization of Nafion/Sulfonated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane(sPOSS) Nanocomposite Actuator |

Ionic polymer-metal composite(IPMC) actuators based on Nafion/sulfonated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(sPOSS) nanocomposites were fabricated and their microstructure, mechanical properties and actuation response were characterized by WAXD, DMA and measurement of bending angle and actuation velocity under an applied electric voltage. The actuators were fabricated by coating Nafion/sPOSS nanocomposites with platinum using tetraammimineplatinum(II) chloride. WAXD results showed that the POSS molecules were aggregated to form a nanocrystal in Nafion matrix. DMA analysis showed that storage modulus increased with increasing sPOSS content in the Nafion/sPOSS nanocomposite. Compared to a pure Nafion based IPMC, Nafion/sPOSS nancomposite based IPMCs shows significantly improved bending angle and a more rapid response under an applied electric voltage. |
