Electrodes in membrane electrode assemblies(MEAs) for fuel cell applications are made of catalyst slurry consisting of ionomer binder, solvent and catalysts. Among them, ionomer binder plays an important role in providing proton, gas and electron accessibility from the outer surface of electrode to that of electrolyte depending on its composition in the catalyst slurries. Ionomer binders should use easily volatile solvents (e.g., alcohols) and show good electrochemical and physicochemical properties. In addition, use of the same polymer to the electrolyte used for MEAs is important due to good adhesion between electrodes and electrolyte for fabrication of MEAs. In this study, preparation methods of ionomer binders for solid alkaline fuel cells(SAFCs) were developed in terms of temperature, solvent and preparation time. The ionomer binders developed were characterized by the degree of dissolution, re-precipitation, easiness of preparation and electrochemical properties. |
