Gold nanorods (AuNRs) and nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted much attention as the potential agent for in vivo therapeutics and diagnostics (theragnosis). However, AuNRs and AuNPs cannot be used in the biomedical field because of the cytotoxicity of the AuNRs, and instability in physiological condition of both. To reduce cytotoxicity of the AuNRs and to improve stability of the AuNPs and AuNRs in physiological condition, AuNPs and AuNRs were coated with glycol Chitosan (GC). GC were conjugated with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine(DOPA), one of the major components of the mussel adhesive polymer, and its derivatives, and then applied to encapsulate AuNPs and AuNRs. AuNPs and AuNRs were characterized by zeta-potential, dynamic light scattering, 1H NMR, HR-TEM, stability test in PBS, and in vivo for the Computed Tomography (CT) agent. |
