Nafion/α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) nanocomposites thin films were fabricated on the commercial Nafion 117 in order to reduce methanol permeability in polymer electrolyte membrane for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). We synthesized layered α-ZrP with relatively high proton conductivity and characterized its structure with X-ray scattering (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Synthesized α-ZrP in crystalline state was finely exfoliated in water using surface modification methods and sonication, and this suspension was mixed with Nafion ionomer solution. Subsequently, Nafion/α-ZrP mixture was recasted on Nafion 117 membrane and Nafion/α-ZrP nanocomposites thin films were obtained. This (Nafion/α-ZrP)/Nafion 117 membrane has lower methanol permeability compared with Nafion 117 but still maintain high proton conductivity. |
