Direct methanol fuel cell with double layered structure in cathode electrode |

A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with double layered structure in cathode electrode was fabricated to improve the performance of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The cathode catalyst layer which have double layered structure was comprised of thin Pt black and porous Pt/C to make the catalyst layer tolerant to crossovered methanol solution in cathode. Various concentration of methanol solution were fed into the anode to examine the effect of methanol crossover, and various methods for the electrochemical analysis of the DMFC cathode were performed to clarify the origin of difference in performance of MEAs. The MEA with double layered structure in cathode exhibited higher performance and lower cathode resistance compared to those of conventional MEAs with only thin Pt black or porous Pt/C layer, as a result of the combination of the two layers. |
