Perfluorinated membranes have been extensively used as polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cells in practical systems because of their excellent chemical, mechanical stability and high proton conductivity. However, the stability of perfluorinated membranes is decreased at the elevated temperature and low humidity condition. In this study, sulfonated hydrocarbon-based reinforced membranes were prepared by impregnating nonwoven substrate membrane with sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) ionomers. The proton conductivity, mechanical properties, and cell performances of the reinforced membranes were characterized and compared with the pristine SPAES membranes. |
