Recently polymeric micro-spheres are widely studied due to their applications for printing, display, and medical studies. Polymeric micro-spheres are conveniently prepared with emulsion, suspension and dispersion polymerization. In this work, we studied a process for preparation of polymeric micro-spheres via electro-spray. TEMPO-terminated polystyrene(Mw≒15,000 g/mol,PDI＜1.2) was synthesized with nitroxide mediated polymerization. At 20 wt.% of polymer solution, micro-spheres ranging 1~10 m were prepared via electro-spray. To prepare colored micro-spheres, gray and black micro-spheres made by electro-spray were prepared by grafting the TEMPO-terminated polystyrene with carbon black as inorganic pigment. We also prepared the red, green and blue Micro-spheres using the various organic dyes. With increasing of dye content, the color saturation of the colored polymer micro-spheres increased and average diameter of the colored polymer micro-spheres decreased from 9.5 to 2.5 m. |
