Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) have the advantages of elastomeric properties and processability. Elastomeric properties of TPU are imparted by the hard segments via physical crosslinking. However, increasing the hard segment contents of TPU to increase the modulus is limited due to the increase of the melt viscosity. As an effort to improve the modulus of TPU, blends of TPU and polyamide-12 (PA-12) were investigated. TPU/PA-12 blends were prepared by changing PA-12 content in solutions. After drying the blends, exchange reactions was investigated with FT-IR and morphology was studied with SEM. It was observed that the dispersed phases of particles of PA-12 rich phase were affected by the PA-12 content and heat treatments due to the exchange reaction. The blends were also investigated with DMA, DSC, and tensile tests. It is postulated that the incorporation of PA-12 into TPU resulted in the improvement of the modulus without the sacrifice of other mechanical and thermal properties. |
