As a candidate for electrorheological(ER) materials, polystyrene/polyaniline (PS/PANi) core/shell micro-particles were synthesized, which were spherical and mono-disperse. In this experiment, nearly 1μm sized PS beads were prepared previously through dispersion polymerization. Afterwards they were coated by HCl de-doped PANi in situ of the aniline swelling PS particles suspension. The thickness of PANi shell was controlled by changing weight ratio of PS to aniline from 1 to 6 (1, 1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6). Morphologies of these core/shell particles as well as the coating thicknesses were observed by SEM and TEM. Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) was also used to examine the coating amount of PANi to the surface of PS particles. The core/shell particles based ER fluids were made by dispersing them into silicone oil with the same volume percent of 10%. To test the ER properties, a rotation rheometer was used through the rotation test with controlled shear rate. |
