The standard treatments for cancer can be divided into surgical methods, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. In practice, after cancer is removed by surgical treatment, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are often combined. However, radiotherapy or chemostherapy has a problem of killing not only cancer cells but also normal cells and cause tissue necrosis. Therefore, it is significant to develop an effective drug delivery system to avoid these systemic side effects. Paclitaxel is a drug for cancer chemotherapy. In this study, we encapsulated paclitaxel in chitosan microspheres for the possible topical drug delivery. The chemical state of microsphere, encapsultation efficiency, and in vitro paclitaxel release kinetics were analyzed. In conclusion, this work strongly indicates that chitosan microparticulate system can be utilized for the controlled release of paclitaxel and possibly used for the cancer therapy. |
