Mineral oil is most commonly used as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers. However, it has several drawbacks, such as poor biodegradability, non-renewability, and being an environmental pollutant. Recently, there has been increasing interest to use an environmentally freiendly insulating oil based on biodegradable vegetable oil. Therefore, we developed dimethyl carbonate (DMC) based transesterification using lipase for the production of bio-based insulating oil from soybean oil. DMC can be used as a transesterification reagent for making esters from soybean oil. Glycerol carbonate was simulatnously formed during DMC based transesterification. The produced insulating oil containing glycerol carbonate can be directly used without separation processes. The key parameters were expolored to determine optimal transesterification conditions. The chemical and physical properties of bio-based insulating oil were also evaluated. |
