Photo- and pH-responsive microgels were prepared by mixing of chitosan and cinnamic acid (CA). Chitosan, which is excellent in biocompatibility, was a cationic polymer and CA, which is readily dimeried and dedimered under UV irradiation at wavelength of 365nm and 254nm respectively, was negative charged under the strongly alkaline condition, thus they would interact with each other to form chitosan-cinnamic acid (CCA) due to the electrostatic interaction. And microgels were formed because of the self-assembly of hydrophobic interaction of CCA. The shape was spherical on SEM photo, and the diameter, measured on dynamic light scattering equipment, was a few micrometers. The size dramatically decreased and then markedly increased by the irradiation of λ at 365 nm and 254 nm respectively. When exposing to strongly acidic condition, microgels was not formed so that CCA is potential to be used as a pH-responsive hydrophobic drug carriers. |
