Electric Field-responsive Conducting Polymer Nanostructures for Controlled Drug Delivery |

Conducting polymers have the ability to show reversible redox response for electrical stimulus-based biomedical applications. It was reported that conducting polymer-based nanoparticles (CPNs) loaded with some compounds such as drugs and growth factors showed electrically triggered drug release. Moreover, the CPNs have a huge surface-to-volume ratio, thereby providing excellent loading efficiency and highly sensitive release profiles. In this study, we prepared the drug-loaded CPNs with spherical morphology and colloidal stability by using micro-emulsion polymerization method to develop electric signal-responsive drug delivery carriers. The drug release profile was found to be finely controlled because the drug release was proportional to both number and strength of applied electric field. In conclusion, this work could open a new avenue for advance nanomedicine applications. |
