A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is not only highly efficient device but also an eco-friendly energy-conversion device, which is expected as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional fossil fuel. Maintaining the high humidification in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) during the operation is important to obtain high fuel-cell performance. However, despite many research on PEMFC, the catalyst layer (CL) that achieves high performance under non-humidity is still insufficiently explored. In this study, Nano sized dense structure (NSDS) formed by a phase-separated morphology in an agglomerated CL of Pt/C and Nafion ionomer was fabricated by electrostatic spray deposition (ESD). To keep the water retention, the NSDS layer deposited on top of the conventional CL. As a result, the dual-layered MEA appeared the better cell performance than conventional MEA under the low relative humidification because the NSDS CL enables the self-humidification. |
