Cell membrane is a phospholipid bilayer that separates the cytoplasm from the outside. Many biological processes pass through the cell membrane and associated proteins. Thermal agitation induces two dimensional movements of lipid molecules in the plane of the bilayer. This lateral diffusion is very important property in controlling the dynamics and function of cell membrane. However, the factors that influence the diffusivity of cell membrane are poorly known. By using FRAP (Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching) technique, we show our recent experimental results on the relationship between surface pressure and diffusivity of supported phospholipid bilayer which is good model system for studying cell membrane.
