Benzoboroxole-containing polymers for glucose sensing and insulin delivery |

Reversible covalent bond formation between organoboronic acids and biological diols has been used as a chemical way of detecting glucose in the medium. Boronate-diol ester can only be stabilized in relatively high pH conditions, which makes the use of boronic acid-containing polymers difficult to find in vivo applications such as insulin delivery and non-invasive glucose sensors. We synthesized new types of boronic acid-containing polymers and block copolymers based on benzoboroxole. The resulting polymers and block copolymers showed a good affinity toward monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose. In particular, block copolymers containing a polyboroxole block exhibited sugar-responsive behaviors in the presence of glucose at neutral pH, which can be used for building self-regulating insulin delivery systems and sensors. |
