In this study, we introduce a useful approach to solubilize an UV-A absorbent, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDM) by inducing molecular association with mannosylerythritol lipid (MEL) in polymeric micelles. BMDM has an excellent UV absorption capability in the UV-A wavelength region (320-400 nm). However, it has been known that BMDM is readily decomposed in solutions and emulsion formulations. By using the MEL having a unique molecular structure containing sugar alcohol erythritol as hydrophilic parts and the alkyl chains with different number of carbons as hydrophobic moieties, BMDM is solubilized in polymeric micelles. Finally, we characterize the phase miscibility, micelle morphology, suspension stability and UV absorbance performance. |
