Highly Periodic Toric Focal Conic Domain in Confinement System: Effect of channel geometry |

This study deals with stable and unifomly shaped toric focal conic defects (TFCDs) observed when smectic. We use a semi-fluorinated material which has a stable and highly ordered smectic A (SmA) liquid crystal phase due to rigid fluorinated moiety in the constituent molecules. Experimentally, we determine the relationship between micro-channel size (depth, width) and the radius of TFCD and control the radius of TFCD as corresponding size of micro-channel. To explain the experimental observations, we use an elastic model of TFCD formation, supplemented with the surface anchoring energy. The free energy of the system is calculated as a function of the order parameter ρ=domain radius/channel depth for finite value of the splay (Κ) and the surface anchoring coefficient (σ). The behavior of the system is defined by the balance of the stabilizing elastic term and anchoring term. |
