Surface characterization of cellulose irradiated by Electron Beam |

The surface of cellulose such as henequen, cotton irradiated by EBI with 0 ~ 500kGy have been studied by means of atomic force microscopy(AFM). The topographic profiles of the material surface have been devoted to understand and improve the efficient utilization of interfacial characteristics of various natural fibers and water absorption of natural fiber. RMS(root-mean-square) roughness data were obtained analyzing topography image, using 20*20μm scan area as a total area for the measurements. RMS values were increased with irradiation of EBI until 100kGy and decreased with the increase of energy. The AFM imaging was related to the surface wettability and surface energy of specific natural fiber microstructures. |
