The increasing number and percentage of total joint infections with multiresistant bacteria makes an adequate prophylaxis against the organisms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate biodegradable nanofibrous scaffolds loaded with antimicrobial silver particles having a size of 520 nm. Antibacterial activity of biodegradable nanofibrous scaffolds against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae was studied in vitro. Furthermore, the qualitative ongrowth of human osteoblasts was done to study in vitro cytotoxicity. The silver-containing nanofibrous scaffolds completely inhibited the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. On the other hand, the silver-containing nanofibrous scaffolds used in this study did not show cytotoxicity. Therefore, it could be said that the silver-containing nanofibrous scaffold has the potential to be used in total joint arthroplasty particularly due to its effect against multiresistant bacteria. |
