PS-functionalized MWNTs were produced from the bromo-ended PS with pristine MWNTs in 1,2-dichlorobenzene at 110 oC for 72h. Bromo-ended PS synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was directly reacted with MWNTs under ATRP conditions using CuBr and N,N,N′,N′,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalyst. The PS-functionalized MWNTs were characterized by SEM, 1H-NMR, FT-IR, DSC, and TGA. PS was chemically bonded with MWNTs via atom transfer radical polymerization, and the grafting amount of PS attached to the surface of MWNTs was 40-90 %. From TGA and DSC measurements, PS-functionalized MWNTs were decomposed at lower temperature compared to that of bromo-ended PS, and the addition of MWNTs increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the grafted PS. PS/PS-functionalized MWNTs nanocomposites were prepared with PS-functionalized MWNTs and PS by solution mixing from DMF. The morphology and homogeniety of nanocomposites were characterized by SEM. |
