In interaction LC separation, polymers are normally retained less as column temperature increases since the solute sorption process in the LC column is exothermic in general. However, reverse temperature dependence showing longer retention at higher temperature has been reported. Among them, separation of polystyrene using bare silica stationary phase and chloroform/n-hexane mixture solvent is intriguing since replacing chloroform with other good solvents such as THF, dichloromethane, 1,4-dioxane shows the normal temperature dependence. On the other hand, replacing n-hexane with other non-polar solvents such as isooctane, cyclohexane, n-heptane did not change the temperature dependence. Chloroform is unique to make the polymer sorption to the bare silica stationary phase endothermic. We have investigated the system to elucidate the unique property of chloroform in the NPLC separation of polystyrene. |
